About

About

Rendering and engine programmer. Twelve years into a solo engine I still have not finished, because finishing was never the point.

I played Doom 3 in 2004, went looking for who had built it, and found John Carmack. That was the end of the question “what do you want to do with your life”. Everything since has been the long version of the same answer.

I grew up in Greece and studied in Larisa, building games in student teams that crunched harder than any studio I have worked in since. One of them took us to Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond as Imagine Cup world finalists — sleep-deprived, slightly feral, and completely convinced.

The way out of Greece was a game engine. I gave myself a year, worked hundred-hour weeks, and used it as the portfolio that got me hired abroad. It worked. Then I never stopped working on it, and twelve years later it is still the same codebase.

Since then: an ambitious PSVR title at Sony that got cancelled, Dirt 5 at Codemasters, two years at AMD embedded inside other people’s engines making their frames faster, and now graphics and engine work at BeamNG.

What I optimise for is simple enough to write down. Hard work, altruism, and not compromising. I would rather build the right thing slowly than the acceptable thing on time. And I value personality over skills, because skills can be taught and character cannot.

Taste

Five each, and why

Five ranked beats thirty unranked. If you want the unabridged lists, they are at the bottom.

Games

  1. Alan Wake 1 & 2 The best-looking games of their generation, and they earn it with lighting rather than polygon count.
  2. Doom The reason I do this job at all. I went looking for who built it and found John Carmack.
  3. Colin McRae Rally, Dirt Rally, Dirt Where the interest in tyre models started. Years later I shipped one of them.
  4. Metal Gear Solid Systems you could poke at from any angle, decades before that was normal.
  5. Kerbal Space Program A physics sandbox that teaches you orbital mechanics by humiliating you first.

Films

  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey Every frame composed as though it would be studied later. It was.
  2. The Thing Practical effects from 1982 that still hold up better than most of what renders today.
  3. Predator A perfect action film that quietly turns into a horror film and never announces it.
  4. The Matrix The last time a film changed what the whole industry thought was possible on screen.
  5. The Big Lebowski Because not everything needs to be about ambition.

Books

  1. Game Engine Architecture — Jason Gregory The book that turned wanting to build an engine into knowing how to start.
  2. Leonardo da Vinci — Walter Isaacson Two of my earliest games were named after his machines. This is the reason.
  3. Total Recall — Arnold Schwarzenegger A masterclass in deciding what you want and then refusing to be reasonable about it.
  4. Steve Jobs — Walter Isaacson On taste as an engineering discipline, and the cost of having it.
  5. Elon Musk — Ashlee Vance On what first-principles thinking looks like when it is applied without a safety net.
The long version — The unabridged versions, for completeness.

Say hello

I read everything that is not a recruiter template

Questions about the engine, rendering, or the podcast are always welcome. So is telling me I got something wrong.
